SUMMER STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIPS
Financial assistance from Davidson College in the form of loans, grants, scholarships, and work-study cannot be used for summer study abroad (unless you have a scholarship that includes additional summer stipend).

The resources below can help you explore potential funding opportunities for summer study abroad. As a rule, if you are awarded summer funds and permitted to transfer them to the fall semester or academic year, these funds will replace rather than augment the need-based financial aid award we offer.

There are many kinds of scholarships. Deadlines, eligibility and application requirements may vary for each one. Please directly contact the sponsoring organization(s) for more information.

Below is a breakdown of the most common ones to further help you manage this aspect of your study abroad process.

Destination-specific:  These are scholarships awarded to an applicant based on their prospective host country. It is an incentive to study in that country.

Merit-based:  These are based primarily on GPA, artistic, athletic or other abilities.

Program-specific:  Depending on your specific study abroad provider (Arcadia, CIEE, DIS, IES Abroad, IFSA-Butler, etc.) they may have designated funds for individuals that participate in their program. Qualifications and requirements vary based on the particular scholarship. Please directly ask your program provider about scholarships.

Student-specific:  Students are selected based on factors such as gender, race, religion, family and medical history, or many other student-specific factors. Traditionally underrepresented students also fit into this category and qualifications vary based on the particular scholarship.

Language/Subject-specific:  Language/subject-specific scholarships are awarded by study abroad programs or institutions to individuals based on their major or area of study. These scholarships may require the recipients to enroll in subject-specific courses while abroad or conduct subject-specific research, but it is important to know that qualifications are different for each award.

ADDITIONAL TIPS:
START EARLY! Start looking into scholarships ASAP.

READ CAREFULLY! Some scholarships require that you write reports or participate in specific programming if you accept the funding. Please read the requirements carefully.

GET CREATIVE!  Ask your family, friends, neighbors, or your community to help contribute money or used items, such as a backpack or travel gear. If you are religious, politically active, or involved in civic organizations in your hometown, leverage relationships with those institutions to possibly acquire financial assistance. You may also want to utilize social media and think about how it can possibly assist you.
