Overseas Student Program (OSP)
The Ginsburg-Ingerman Overseas Student Program (OSP) at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) invites you to take the road less traveled and experience Israel as never before. Raise your expectations and participate in a truly unique immersive study abroad program.

As a study abroad student at BGU, you can spend a semester or year taking challenging and inspiring courses. You will study Hebrew language as well as a variety of courses taught in English that are designed to take advantage of the many academic specialties of BGU, including Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Global Health, Israel Studies, and Sustainable Development & Environment.

Those who are looking for a shorter experience can enroll in one of our summer programs: Data Mining & Business Intelligence for Cyber Security Applications, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, and Global Health International Summer Program. We also offer an Ulpan (Hebrew language study) for four or six weeks during the summer and winter.

To complement your academic studies in Israel, you’re encouraged to participate in volunteer service or a for-credit academic research internship, which will deepen your knowledge and exposure to Israel and its people.

You will also explore Israel on trips organized by OSP, where you will learn about the country’s history, landscape and diverse traditions. Finally, as a student at BGU, you will become a part of the University’s vibrant student body and gain a deep understanding of Israeli life from the “inside.”

Students Hanging Out on Campus

Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU)
BGU is Israel’s fastest growing institution of higher education, most sought after by students and faculty alike with a student population of more than 19,000. Its diverse student body hails from cities and villages all over Israel and includes native born Israelis, Jews and Arabs, including Bedouins, as well as new immigrants from Ethiopia, the former Soviet Union, and other countries.

BGU is a known favorite among students and it is easy to understand why. A survey conducted by Israel’s Council for Higher Education rated BGU the #1 university for students by Israeli undergraduate students. Israelis from around the country come to BGU not only for the incredible academic opportunities, but also for its vibrant and engaged campus atmosphere. BGU is unique for Israeli universities in that the majority of students live on or near campus, creating a unique environment for study abroad students. Approximately two-thirds of the student body is involved in some form of volunteering or community engagement, and participants in the OSP are highly encouraged to take advantage of BGU’s active student life.

BGU StudentFest

Beer-Sheva & The Negev Region
BGU is located in Beer-Sheva, which is often referred to as the capital of the Negev region. The city boasts a diverse population of 200,000 people, of which approximately 19,500 are BGU students and an additional 10,000 students attending other higher education institutions in the city. In fact, over 50% of the city's population is under the age of thirty-five, making it an ideal location to experience the young and vibrant life of contemporary Israel.

Juxtaposed with the city’s pride in its ancient history is the vision for its future. A shining example of this vision is the new Advanced Technologies Park, which aims to promote technology and commercialization of cutting-edge research and innovation. These developments have helped to bring the city of Beer-Sheva to the world stage and to become both the future Silicon Valley of the Middle East, as written by Forbes, and a cybertech oasis, as written by TechCrunch. In fact, in a collaborative study between T3 Advisors and Brandeis International Business School, Beer-Sheva was listed as one of seven worldwide “cities of tomorrow” that are up-and-coming hubs that technology and life sciences companies should consider as they evaluate their global location strategy.

Israel’s largest cities, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, are easily accessible from Beer-Sheva. The Israel Railways intercity rail station is across the street from the dorms and only a three minute walk from the main BGU campus. It provides modern high-speed train service between Beer-Sheva and Tel Aviv in under an hour, with service continuing to Haifa and the north. Jerusalem is only an hour and a half ride away by taxi or bus, which depart right from the main campus. Eilat, Israel’s southernmost city and international tourist destination on the Red Sea, is only a bus ride away. OSP alumni have reported that BGU’s location makes it ideal for exploring all parts of Israel both on their own and through OSP organized programs.
