Financial Aid & Education Abroad
For many students, financial aid is an important piece of the puzzle for a successful education abroad experience. This page explains some of the key information you need in order to plan ahead for your semester or academic year abroad. Check out a useful video from the Office of Financial Aid to understand how your aid works, review important deadlines and requirements, and download a copy of our Financial Aid Calculator so you can make informed decisions about your program choice!
Davidson financial aid is only available for programs which take place during the semester or academic year. Students with questions about funding for summer or winter break programs should contact an OEAA advisor.
Overview
Students studying abroad may continue to apply merit scholarships or need-based financial aid towards approved academic year and semester programs (both Davidson and partner programs). Aid is calculated based on the full cost of attendance in the study abroad program and therefore may differ from the amount of aid for a semester on campus.
-
If the cost of attendance for a program is less than the cost of a semester at Davidson, a student’s financial aid package will be reduced.
-
If the cost of attendance for a program is greater than a semester at Davidson, a student’s aid will NOT be increased to cover the additional amount, and students will be responsible for covering the overage.
Getting Started
If you are planning to use financial aid towards your education abroad program, get started by reviewing these points:
-
Review the official information on the Financial Aid website Their team is happy to answer questions about off-campus study.
-
Start planning as early as possible. Early planning is essential, so you can make informed, cost-effective decisions about your program and expenses.
-
Pay close attention to all deadlines and requirements. Failure to adhere to deadlines or to submit paperwork on time may delay your aid processing.
-
Allow for enough processing time. If your program, visa application, or scholarship application requires a form or letter documenting your aid, be sure to submit a request using the online form as far in advance as possible (at least 5-7 business days!). The Office of Financial Aid cannot guarantee immediate turnaround on last-minute requests.
-
Be realistic. When researching programs, pay attention to both the program costs and the general cost of living in the program location. Consider what your aid will and will not pay for. How will you cover any shortfalls?

Financial Aid Calculator
Planning for education abroad or away begins with understanding your costs. Use our Education Abroad & Away Financial Aid Calculator worksheet (Davidson login required) to estimate your total program expenses, and see how your Davidson financial aid package may apply to the program. Some tips for using the calculator:
-
Make a copy of the worksheet and save it to your Google Drive. You can then duplicate the sheet and compare costs for multiple programs, if needed.
-
Find your program costs. All partner programs have a page or tab with their estimated costs per program. If you need assistance finding that information, contact an OEAA advisor.
-
Pay attention to the numbers. If your program costs exceed Davidson's cost of attendance, you will need to think about how you can cover the overage or look for a less-expensive program. Use our budgeting worksheet to plan!
